Qualification Description

The purpose of the General English course is to provide students with a strong, well - balanced knowledge and application of the English language. It is taught in a fun and practical manner which will engage the students. The course provides opportunity for students to learn, make errors, receive feedback and engage in authentic, functional and practical conversational settings.

Learner Characteristics :

The profile of the target learner group is current university students and recent graduates from certificat e and diploma courses from non-English speaking countries. This learner group usually has studied English in their home country, but they are still very limited and are not confident with their skills. They see English skills as a very valuable asset, which can help them gain a better job in a reputable/international company or get a promotion/higher salary.

Course duration :

The course duration is a total of 60 weeks (50 weeks of study + 10 weeks of holidays). The minimum enrolment period is 4 weeks. Students will study speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation and the course will prepare them to use common and daily English outside the classroom or to move on to further English study.

Course Entry Requirements :
Education Level Requirement

There is no minimum education level to enter this course. Even if students have not completed High School, they can still learn English and support is provided to students with difficulties in spelling, grammar, vocabulary etc.

English Language Requirement

The GE course starts at an Elementary level. Students will need an Elementary level at a minimum to enrol into the course (Not Beginner or zero English).
All applicants’ English levels will be confirmed before enrolment either via an IELTS test (or equivalent taken less than 2 years ago) or via the Axis English Placement Test.

Age Requirement

Students need to be over 18 years old on enrolment day to enter this course.

All students need to complete the Axis English Placement test on their first day in order to ascertain the student’s current English level. Once testing is complete, students are advised of their level, given a course outline and students are asked to purchase the relevant level textbook before entering class. As the English test results achieved vary from proficiency test to proficiency test, Axis will test all new students at enrolment to ensure fresh results are obtained. This assessment will provide the most current assessment of each stude nt’s English skills.
